The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
