Trumpism's most revealing and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying the public his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you should give him your sweater too.
The apparent and straightforward truth that the Savior of the gospels requests a form of profound affection focused on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop in this past year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the best parts in US history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it suggest feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both humility and faith, a mixture that serious US believers should embrace.
