Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of space.
