The artist has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound honor winnings to the MVT, which works to protect the United Kingdom's small music venues.

The star was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release People Watching was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the shows I did around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation assisted venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues stemming from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that funds from shows in major spaces supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to give his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

When Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman the singer declared that the act would donate their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite divided her bounty between a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed new equipment," the artist shared with outlets.

In recent years, they contributed their winnings to the community center that developed their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally 1994 winners M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated vocalist Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected a couple of small stages in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by a national body and supporters who purchase "shares" in the venues.
