A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
