A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
