Britain and America have announced a important commercial pact that will guarantee no duties on UK drug products going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has pledged to raise expenditure on medicines through the public health system. This move guarantees that tariffs on these key products will be held at nothing for a period of 36 months.

This development follows previous warnings to hike import taxes on branded drug imports, with figures floated up to double the cost.

"This agreement with the United Kingdom bolsters the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and establishes much-needed balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement said.

Commercial Significance

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant goods shipped to the United States, which is clearly the largest buyer for major UK drugmakers.

Trade data reveal that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines worth billions to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that span.

"This deal secures employment, stimulates funding and facilitates the UK to emerge as a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed UK Commitments

The deal involves several notable changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to raise overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be capped at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates topped twenty percent.

Industry Background

The deal takes place against a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

This friction were intensified by claims that US customers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while substantial investments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
